Sicily: Standing at a spectacular crossroads 21 September 2011

    Artikel sehen

Centuries of Arab rule helped forge the uniquely Sicilian way of life. It's a cultural influence that's still felt by visitors today, says Sarah Merson

It was another scorching hot day in the seaside town of San Vito Lo Capo on Sicily's west coast, so I sought shade under one of the tented canopies belonging to Thàam, a charming little restaurant tucked away on a side street, with a menu centred around couscous dishes. The tables were decorated with ornate North African lanterns; scatter cushions shone with ethnic colour.

In 1768 German polymath JW Goethe pronounced that "without Sicily, Italy cannot be fully understood". Yet Sicily – and certainly San Vito Lo Capo, which occupies the tip of a north-western promontory jutting out into the Mediterranean – cannot be understood without understanding the influence of North Africa. Geographically, it is closer to Tunisia than the Italian mainland. And from a culinary point of view, such is the reverence felt for the couscous specialities in San Vito Lo Capo – they are found in almost every restaurant in town – that this week marks a six-day festival dedicated to the dish. Among the highlights of "Couscous Fest", which runs every September, is a couscous cook-off, where local chefs compete with their African counterparts, who arrive from as far away as the Ivory Coast and Cape Verde.

Multiculturalism in action? It's certainly a contrast to Sicily's ancient history, which is a tapestry of invasions, intrigues and internecine battles. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans and the Spanish have all fought for and dominated the island in turn over the centuries. The result is a complex heritage – yet a significant part is still based around Arabic culture.

At the tip of the headland, San Vito Lo Capo has been developed as a seaside resort, with sun seekers flocking to make the most of the sugary-white sand of the crescent-shaped beach and glittering waters. Patrolling among them are Tunisian beach vendors proferring fresh coconuts sourced from Tunis. Earlier in the day, I'd sipped the deliciously sweet milk, sand between my toes, with my back to the Mediterranean. The view beyond the orange-coloured buildings was dotted with giant carobs and windswept palm trees in a scene reminiscent of the North African landscape.[...]

I was staying at Renèe, a white-washed villa close to the village of Scopello, which lies to the south of San Vito Lo Capo. Inside, the terracotta floor tiles keep it cool, while the kitchen is festooned with 19th-century ceramics. The owner, Renata Plaja, was keen to stress Sicily's unique character:

"I'm Sicilian," said Renata, "but like most Sicilians, I've adopted a social attitude which is inherent in the Arabs: we don't like to live life in a hurry, and we enjoy lengthy siestas... We are welcoming and hospitable, openly accepting of people from other countries and cultures, and over time those people have come to identify themselves as Sicilians too."

As I reclined on my sun-lounger by Renèe's swimming pool, the Mediterranean shimmering in the distance, it seemed a reasonable moment to indulge in a lengthy Sicilian siesta of my own. Whether a snooze in the afternoon is profoundly North African or Italian, there's little doubt that Sicily's epic history has shaped the island and its people in myriad ways. And the couscous, you can be assured, is always excellent.

Il gusto etnico di Renata Plaja: Renèe - Juli 2004

    Artikel sehen

  • Camilla Culley | September 2011

We did enjoy our holiday in Sicily. We found Renee to be a really good villa, nicely furnished and comfortable with a great pool and verandah. Renata was so welcoming and friendly and she really cared about the villa and also about giving us a good time in Sicily. That was very much appreciated - great hospitality - and it seemed more like staying with a friend which was very special.

  • Tessa Chamberlain | August 2011

We have so enjoyed our stay at Renèe near Castellammare del Golfo. Perfect distance from the Scopello and Castellammare that one felt close but not too close. wonderful views and Renata was so helpful. Particularly loved her recommendation to restaurants in Castellammare and taking a boat along the Zingaro coastline.

  • Michael and Elisabeth Darby | July 2011

Renèe lived up to everything your brochure promised and Renata could not have been more charming, hospitable and helpful. An excellent holiday and we will certainly consider returning. THANKYOU.

  • Mandy Anderson | Juni 2011

Firstly I would definitely use your company again. The overall process from beginning to end was very easy and informative. (...) Renata (property owner) was extremely helpful and we enjoyed her thoughtful recommendations and advice. It all helped us settle a lot quicker. Also the small touches of lavender under our pillows, soap in the bathroom and general supplies in the fridge and kitchen made all the difference.
The villa was great, spacious and had everything we needed. The pool and views were spectacular, the best we have had so far in our villa experiences.
We loved Sicily and is the only country to date I would visit again. Luscious is the word I would use to describe overall the sun, sea, beaches, greenery and flowers. A bit of paradise and better than the Seychelles in my opinion. When we come again we shall check your villas first as I think you are excellent at selecting luxurious villas in good positions.
So all in all a great holiday and good doing business with you!

  • Caroline Powell | October 2010

Villa Renne was just perfect for our young family, with the open plan living arrangement and safe and secure pool area for the young children to run around. Mrs Renata was very welcoming on our arrival and everything we needed was provided for in beautiful surroundings.
We had a wonderful time in Sicily and found the country, the food and the people fantastic, warm and friendly, especially towards our three children. There are lots of places to explore and the children were never bored and slept very well every night.
We found SoloSicily website very helpful with quick responses on dates and prices and lots of helpful information for our first visit. We will defiantly return and will recommend your website to our friends. Many thanks for a wonderful holiday.

  • Patrick Christie | September 2010

Renee, is set in a magnificent setting with stunning views, especially from the terrace – the sea straight ahead and hills and mountains on both sides. Very peaceful and very easy simply to just sit and look out at it all.
The villa itself is well furnished and stocked with equipment, comfortable and had lots of space. The pool was really nice and well kept.
We found the west and north west of Sicilia very interesting and managed to see various sites and towns and villages – Erice, Segesta, Selinunte, Agrigento, Trapani, the salt pans and more including the countryside and many vineyards. We really liked nearby Scopello and went there on a number of occasions, often to eat. We went to Favignana for a day which was really fascinating and nostalgic as I had been there in 1977 – it has changed greatly.
Overall we had a wonderful holiday and learned much about the history and the people of Sicilia. We found the people we met friendly and helpful. We had some marvellous food and good wine.
We left thinking that there was much more we could do and see if we had had more time.
Regarding the organisation of the holiday, this went well with no problems. We found the directions and information you sent very helpful. As regards your website I have found this easy to use and helpful.
Thank you for your help with this holiday.

  • Ian Haynes | August 2010

We had a lovely time in Sicily and found it an ideal holiday destination. We were especially pleased with Renata's wonderful house and her kind help throughout our visit. It was a real pleasure to get to know her and her family. The house had everything we needed for a super stay. I would recommend it without hesitation to anyone looking for a beautiful place to stay in Sicily

  • Alice Aveline | August 2010

We got back from holiday yesterday and I wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed the holiday. The villa was lovely - just as promised on the photos on the website and Renata, the owner was very generous and helpful. The map you included in the welcome pack of shops in the nearby town was very useful. We found the website easy to use and it was one of the reasons we booked with SoloSicily. It is very useful to see lots of photos of the villa. Thanks for your help

  • Gaby Morrison | July 2010

The villa was lovely and lived up to its photos. Renata is a lovely lady and was very hospitable. The air conditioning is an absolute blessing and works out very cheap. The pool and the views are fabulous.
Scopello is gorgeous and cely lively in the evening - a very family place. Castellamare is more of a big town but if you stick to the old parts and the port it is lovely. We hired a motor boat on several days and explored the coast which was fantastic as the sea is crystal clear and there are lots of lovely little coves to explore. The sicilian food was wonderful and the people at the local bakers and market were great at helping us choose deliciousfood for picnics etc and we ate at some great restaurants. The sight seeing is good as well - it is possibvle to easily do the Valley of the Temples and Segesta and visit Marsala. And if you ask my children they would say that the best thing is the gelati in brioche!

Finally your website was very clear and we were impressed with the promptness of all of your responses.
Thank you for a lovely holiday!

  • Stephen O'Rahilly | March 2010

We loved our stay in Castellmare del Golfo. We arrived in Trapani and drove across, following the maps which you had provided. We arrived safely and quickly at the house... We were greeted warmly and shown all the necessary details of the house. The facilities of the house were fine and we were glad of the central heating! However, we are pretty hardy and the pool was well used, as was the terrace overlooking the valley. Being very keen cooks, we could have done perhaps with some slightly better knives, chopping boards, pans etc. but
were able to produce some pretty good meals even with what we had. The situation of the house was completely gorgeous and we walked in the neighbourhood a lot, in beautiful surroundings. We had easy access to Erice, Segesta, the Zingora and Trapani where we spent an extraordinary day watching the Misteri on Good Friday. We felt that the house was really well organised for a family holiday, with plenty of space and different places to sit and talk. We are talking about going again, but perhaps in a late May when it would be
warmer. Having said that, the wild flowers around the house were breathtaking and that was one of the benefits of going early in the year. The information pack you provided was great and provided us with most things we needed to know.

  • Katie Pritchard | September 2009

We had a wonderful time at the Villa- it was very clean and decorated to a high standard. The pool area and views of the valley are spectacular and our host Renata was very friendly and extremely hospitable. I would highly recommend this villa to anyone travelling to Sicily. Thanks again to both you and Renata for great service and a wonderful holiday.

  • Marco Paonessa | August 2009

  • Christiane Marksteiner | July 2009

Villa renée was beautiful! a perfectly equipped house with a tasteful and private atmosphere and a wonderful and quiet surrounding. also Renata, the house-owner is a very lovely person. We really can recommend the property and we had a perfect holiday! Concerning the list of recommended restaurants in Castellamare del Golfo: La Cambusa was not really good (average tourist-place). but ristorante Monsu is excellent!!!!! missing Sicilia already... Best regards from back home in vienna.

  • Tim & Sue Coombs | July 2009

Thanks for advising the oil strike, thankully Renata (property owner) came to our rescue and made sure we could get back to the villa, then went back to Palermo in time to get some diesel on Tuesday evening, then drove out to the villa again in the morning with the fuel for us. Of course we thanked her profusely, but we would like you to know how helpful she was ... and perhaps you would thank her again from us please?! And we had a lovely week in an excellent villa. It had all we expected with the extra pleasure of feeling like a real home (because it is!)

  • Linsey Parkinson | June 2009

...I especially want to say how very nice Renata (property owner) was. She made us feel very welcome and her house shows such love and attention to detail - it was a wonderful place to stay.
Next time we'll take a proper look at Palermo... Thank you very much for everything.

  • Susanne Baldissera | March 2009

Thank you for the demand and the good organization of our stay. We enjoyed the villa Renee very much. It's a wonderfull place and so clean. The villa was was so charming decorated and prepared for us. Primarily, Mrs. Renata (property owner) was so touching to our children. Above all, the kitchen was exceptionally clean and very well sorted. Mrs. Renata has just thought of everything, even mineralwater and milk was available. The provided bottle of wine we really enjoyed. We have particularly appreciated the electric blankets.

  • Sara and Graeme Spencelely and Family | November 2008

On behalf of us all we had a fantastic time! The Villa was perfect for us, clean, well equipped and with the most charming feel to it. Renata (property owner) was a fabulous owner and we were happy with the way she introduced Villa Renee to us. We would love to come back again some time. Renata asked me to email a photo to her that we took of a beautiful sunset...

  • Familie Van de Kamp | October 2008

We had a great time at Villa Renee. It is a nice villa and the new pool is superb. The fantastic view on the surrounding landscape and the sea are impressive. Renata (property owner), made us some perfect suggestions for a few trips like Erice, the beach/bay in the reserve and visiting Palermo by shuttle bus. She was a great host, please bring her our regards. We could not do that personally, because we had to leave quite to the airport. Summarising: We enjoyed our stay very much!!!
